Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt captured in words the principles upon which every society should be founded: the freedom to speak, to believe, to live without want and without fear. These freedoms cannot be taken for granted, but require dedication and a willingness to fight for them. They are a constant invitation to make our world a more humane and just place.

As Chair of the Roosevelt Foundation, I consider it a privilege to be part of a tradition that upholds these values. The laureates we honour each year demonstrate that a single individual or organisation can truly make a difference. Their stories of courage inspire us to stand up for what is right, even when we face adversity.

In Zeeland and beyond, we are working to engage new generations with this legacy. Young people, in particular, demonstrate that the world can change when they speak out and take responsibility. In them, I see the future of the Four Freedoms.

It is my firm belief that, with the Four Freedoms as our guiding principle, we can contribute to a world in which everyone can live as Roosevelt envisaged: free, with dignity, and in peace. That future begins with us. Today.
