Roosevelt Lecture by Nikole Hannah-Jones
After her impressive lecture in 2022, Nikole Hannah-Jones is returning once again to Middelburg. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and creator of The 1619 Project will deliver a Roosevelt Lecture entitled “The Battle for the Soul of America” on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Nikole Hannah-Jones will engage in a conversation about how art and historical memory play a role in the struggle for freedom and justice. Especially at a time when American democracy is under pressure, her lecture underscores the importance of telling history.
Following her brief lecture, Nikole Hannah-Jones will join RIAS director and historian Damian Pargas to explore the close connection between history, democracy, and the fight for justice. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience afterward.
