Opening of the exhibition ‘Oud Zeer’

On 21 April, as part of the ‘Four Freedoms throughout the years’ programme, the exhibition ‘Oud Zeer’ will open at the Wandelkerk in Middelburg. The opening will be performed by Harry van der Maas, a member of the Provincial Executive of Zeeland. ‘Oud Zeer’ is a project by the Open Mind Foundation, the Burma-Siam Railway and Pakan Baroe Railway Commemoration Foundation (SHBSS).

The Netherlands and Indonesia share a long history. That history is marked by many painful moments. The travelling photo exhibition ‘Oud Zeer’ explores that history. The 19 photographs in the exhibition depict family members spanning four generations. In their stories, those portrayed reflect on how they and their families deal with the fraught and silenced history of the Dutch East Indies and Indonesia. Stories of war, uprooting and a cold reception in the Netherlands, but also of resilience, pride and the passing on of cultural heritage. The project shows how this history continues to have an impact and how new generations relate to a long-unspoken past.

The opening starts at 3.30 pm and takes place at the Wandelkerk, Groenmarkt 12 - 4331 BH Middelburg (entrance at the bottom of Lange Jan on Koorkerkplein). Doors open at 3.15 pm. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to view the exhibition. The photo exhibition will remain on display until 12 May.
